sankofa bird

The “Sankofa” is a metaphorical symbol used by the Akan people of Ghana, generally depicted as a bird with its head turned backward taking an egg from its back. It expresses the importance of reaching back to knowledge gained in the past and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress.  What poem or speech inspires you to reflect on your history and helps to provide direction for your successful future?

Our School

Proud to serve our diverse population.

At Northeast Middle School, we are proud to educate the diverse population of the historic Northeast Kansas City community. Our goal is to prepare every student with the academic, social and technological skills to be successful in high school.

We welcome students from all over the world with a variety of services to assist in their education career, including those students new to the country. Our New Americans class helps newcomers adapt to the new school environment, start the process of becoming literate in English and help students move on to the next level of classroom instruction.

Student-led programs.

A well-rounded, 21st century education starts with a combination of focused academics and a variety of complimentary student activities and organizations. At Northeast Middle, we are proud to offer a wide array of student-driven activities and clubs. Students are encouraged to become a leader throughout the school year in programs such as student council, newspaper, engineering club and more.
